Umair Javed

Dr. Umair Javed is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Politics at the Mushtaq Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS), at LUMS. His research interests span the study of Pakistan’s emergent middle classes, state-society relations in the global South, and the political economy of governance and reform in democratising countries. He has previously worked as a researcher at the Department of Human Geography, King’s College London, the Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP), and as a governance specialist at The Asia Foundation.

Dr. Javed has an MSc in Politics from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), and a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He currently writes a fortnightly current affairs column for Pakistan’s premier English language daily, DAWN. His academic and opinion writings have been published by Economic and Political Weekly (EPW), Herald, The National, Business Standard, BBC, Sky News, The Guardian, and many others.
